Wouldn’t it be great if you could find a financial partner to provide clear, objective financial advice and education all for one transparent, flat fee? Someone who gets to know you and your family personally. Someone who understands how you arrived where you are today. Someone who can help you cut through the clutter and gain peace of mind.

Our Investment Philosophy

Inspiration Financial Planning believes that the best way for individual investors to be successful is to focus on low-cost, broadly diversified, easy to understand portfolios. Clients should invest appropriately based on their time horizon and risk tolerance, and plan to ride out market highs and lows over the long-term.

Inspiration Financial Planning helps clients with their investments in three distinct ways.

Clients with a company sponsored retirement plan

For these clients, IFP assists in determining the appropriate asset allocation based on the results of the Risk Tolerance Questionnaire. Once that is determined, IFP researches available options within the plan that will fit the asset allocation, while also taking into account the following criteria:

  • Global Diversification
  • Simplicity of managing over time
  • Investment fees

In some cases, IFP may also recommend an allocation and investments within the plan that, when coupled with accounts outside the plan, achieves these objectives at a household level instead of an account level.

Clients with assets outside of a company sponsored plan

For these clients, IFP primarily recommends working with First Ascent Asset Management (FAAM), a third-party investment manager that IFP collaborates with. FAAM is a Registered Investment Adviser registered with the SEC that works only with other advisers to help them serve their clients.

FAAM functions as the investment “back-office” for IFP in terms of investment, economic, and market research, portfolio construction, account trading and rebalancing, and account opening and maintenance activities. Actual accounts and investments are held with TD Ameritrade as the custodian, and all investments are publicly available securities.

FAAM has three types of portfolios available to IFP clients: passive-only, core passive plus active satellites, and factor select. Each type of portfolio has various versions to match client risk tolerance/allocation needs, and also has a tax-sensitive version for those accounts subject to taxation each year. IFP assists clients in selecting the appropriate allocation, portfolio series, and type of account for their needs.

IFP has chosen to work with FAAM for several reasons:

  • IFP and clients sit on the same side of the table when examining the investment options
  • Outsourcing for professional management of portfolios is a cost-effective way for IFP to provide this service to clients
  • Low fixed-cost structure for investments compared to other alternatives
  • Various portfolio options for different types of investors

For clients choosing this option, they will sign a separate Investment Management Agreement with FAAM, and pay FAAM directly for the Investment Management services. Clients may also have the option of deducting their IFP fees from their investment accounts held at the custodian and managed by FAAM.

Clients who choose to manage their investments themselves

For clients with assets outside of a company retirement plan that wish to maintain investments themselves, IFP recommends clients consider the services of a “robo-advisor”. This is a type of investing service where a company such as Vanguard, Betterment, Charles Schwab, Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, etc offers similar services to FAAM, for a fee, usually calculated as a % of assets under management. The company usually has a set number of portfolios from which to choose, offers rebalancing and tax-loss harvesting, and manages the accounts and trading processes.

IFP will assist with selecting the appropriate asset allocation, types of accounts, and help clients understand the fee structure of a particular robo-advisor. IFP will also work with clients to make sure their household investment picture is appropriately structured based on the robo-advisor the client chooses, and types of accounts the client has.

Under this option, clients are responsible for choosing their own investment manager, maintaining their accounts, and paying investment management fees that are separate from and in addition to IFP Ongoing Comprehensive Planning fees.

IFP does not make individual investment recommendations in outside accounts.

Make sure you understand all the fees you could be paying on any investments you have.

Nannette L. Kamien, CFP®, MBA

I created Inspiration Financial Planning in 2015 after seeing how hard it was to find affordable, objective, financial advice tailored to my peers and colleagues.

I was frustrated with the traditional wealth management industry where only those who were already wealthy could receive unbiased advice billed based on the size of their investment portfolio.

For those of us who didn't fit in that box, it was difficult to know who was trying to sell us insurance or investments and provide "free" financial planning, v. providing advice in our best interests under a transparent pricing structure reflective of the value REAL planning provides.

My generation is balancing uncertainty in a number of different areas from careers, real estate, and health care costs, to rising education costs, aging parents, and longer life expectancy. It’s more important than ever that we make solid financial decisions as we navigate this uncertainty.

I know first-hand what it's like to switch jobs, get married, have a baby, and buy real estate within a span of two years. I understand the challenges you face balancing competing financial priorities like saving for retirement, and saving for college or other goals, while managing variable income, and trying to keep up with all of life's changes that happen in your 30's, 40's and 50's. I can help you determine where you stand today financially, and help you plan to achieve YOUR inspiring future.

When I'm not helping clients, I enjoy spending time with my husband Rich, and our children Ali and Nate. I love to read, play golf, and travel.

Do I need to have my finances in order before I contact you?

Not at all. A big part of the up front, and ongoing, value of financial planning is organization of your financial life. Through working with me you will learn what pieces of information you need to pull together in order to create your plan. I will help you put them all together to get crystal clear on your current situation.

Do I have to put the plan into action all by myself?

No. Those who have a partner in making changes to their lives are more successful. I’m not going to give you a big binder of paper and send you on your way. As part of my ongoing coaching service, I will provide accountability to help you achieve change. I will assist in prioritizing your steps and make sure you are supported through your financial journey.

Do you sell financial products?

No. As a fee-only financial planner, my only source of income is from clients. This is to prevent conflicts of interest, and allows me to act in a fiduciary capacity 100% of the time we are working together.

If you don’t sell me financial products, where do I get them?

Once we determine the appropriate steps to implement your financial plan, then we work together to find services and products that fit. As an independent financial planner, my goal is to find providers that offer superior value and transparency. I seek to find the best solution possible at the lowest available cost. I work with insurance, legal, tax, and investment providers that I believe in.

What is your investment philosophy?

I believe that low-cost, passive investing is the best way to maximize your returns. Based on your risk tolerance and time horizon, I will recommend an allocation for all of your investments that will help you reach your goals. I do not recommend specific “hot” stocks, nor do I believe that active management brings superior returns over the long term. I do not try and time the market.

I Am Not Wealthy. Why Do I Need Financial Planning Help?

When most people think about financial planning, they immediately think of investment management or “wealth” management. The problem with that is then you might think, “If I don’t have investments or wealth, do I really need a financial planner?”

Comprehensive financial planning is about so much more than investments. Every day you make decisions that affect your financial life with respect to budgeting, large purchases, employee benefits, insurance, and savings. I can help optimize all of these areas.

So How Will Your Financial Planning Process Help Me?

In a nutshell, our financial planning service is a process. It’s understanding what you have today, what you want to have in the future, and figuring out how you are going to get there. Inspiration might strike you at any point in your life and you’ll want to get off the path you are on, and go down a new one. If you have a solid financial plan, you will be able to know if you can follow your inspiration.
